DAM Marine expert advice: Never neglect visual inspection. An anode that does not wear is not a good sign: it means it is not protecting your engine and that your Volvo stern drive is corroding instead. Maintenance of your cathodic protection does not follow a fixed hourly schedule like an oil change, but depends on the aggressiveness of the environment. However, one universal rule applies: the 50% rule. It is recommended to check the condition of your zinc or aluminium anodes at least once a month if the boat is afloat, and systematically whenever the boat is hauled out. You must replace them immediately as soon as the anode has lost half of its original volume or weight. Warning signs include a deeply pitted surface, visible disintegration (a sponge effect on zinc) or a fastening that becomes loose. Do not wait until the part crumbles away. To make this operation easier, choose a complete kit: this ensures that all engine protections are replaced at the same time, allowing you to start a healthy cycle for the coming season. Zinc, aluminium or magnesium: how should you choose your anode? The role of an anode is to sacrifice itself by corroding instead of the vital metal parts of your boat (propeller, shaft, stern drive). However, for this electrochemical reaction to work correctly, the choice of anode metal must be dictated by the salinity of your navigation area. Installing the wrong alloy can make the protection ineffective or cause excessively rapid wear. Here are the golden rules for selecting your material from our Volvo anodes: Seawater (high salinity): zinc remains the traditional and most widespread standard for sea navigation. A zinc anode provides stable and reliable protection for boats that remain in the water year-round in a saline environment. It is the default choice for most marine boaters. Brackish water and seawater (versatility): aluminium is increasingly favoured by manufacturers, including for the latest-generation Volvo Penta anodes. The aluminium anode is lighter, lasts longer than zinc and proves very effective in mixed waters (estuaries) as well as offshore. Fresh water (lakes and rivers): magnesium is essential here. Since fresh water conducts electricity less effectively, a very active metal is required. Using Volvo magnesium in fresh water ensures that the protection activates; conversely, a zinc anode would not work at all in this environment. Compatibility by Volvo Penta stern-drive type The diversity of Swedish engines requires precise knowledge of the models. To simplify your search, we have categorized our anodes and complete packs, or anode kits, according to the main propulsion families. It is crucial to identify your stern-drive model in order to order the correct reference. Z-Drive stern drives (Aquamatic) We stock parts for historic and modern series: SX series and derivatives: if you navigate with an SX, SX-A, DPS or DPS-A stern drive, we offer the specific Volvo kit including the plate anode (above the propeller) and the cylinder anodes. Single Prop (SP) and Duo Prop (DP) series: for the famous 280 and 290 series stern drives (SP and DP), as well as DP-C, DP-G and DPX, we supply the bar anode (shield) as well as the ring anodes or propeller cones required to protect these transmissions. Modern diesel systems and IPS For powerful inboard engines, protection must be maximized. Find our solutions for DPH and DPR stern drives, as well as IPS pod propulsion systems. These models often use a specific anode shaped like a large ring or a plate integrated into the exhaust system. Saildrive systems (sailing boats) Sailing boats equipped with Volvo engines use a through-hull stern drive (Saildrive).
