Stern drive bellows for Mercruiser Alpha and Bravo engines

Stern drive bellows for Mercruiser Alpha and Bravo engines

Identify your model: Alpha One Gen 1, Gen 2 or Bravo?

Maintaining your transmission is essential for the longevity of your boat. DAM Marine supports you in choosing and replacing your Mercruiser bellows. Whether you navigate with an Mercruiser drive of the Alpha One Gen 1, Gen 2 or Bravo type, discover our complete kits, original or adaptable, and our expert advice to guarantee perfect transmission sealing.

Before ordering, identify your Mercruiser drive. Mistakes between generations are common, especially on used boats or transition years such as 1990-1991.

  • Alpha One Gen 1 (1983-1990): water pump located in the drive. Recognisable by trim rams secured with simple bolts and nuts.
  • Alpha One Gen 2 (1991-present): water pump still located in the drive. Distinguished by wider, more robust trim ram fastenings.
  • Bravo 1, 2, 3 (1988-present): for powerful engines. There is no water pump in the drive, as it is mounted on the engine.

Professional advice: do not rely only on stickers on the cover. If in doubt, the serial number engraved on the drive or engine is the only reliable reference.

To avoid confusing Alpha and Bravo, carefully observe the shape of the trim ram fastenings and check the manufacturing year on your builder's plate. If in doubt, the serial number remains the most reliable way to select the correct part.

Frequently asked questions about stern drive maintenance

Yes, to remove the drive, it is often necessary to remove the propellers and the anode to access certain fastening nuts. This is also the ideal opportunity to grease the propeller shaft.

To avoid any mistake between a Mercruiser Bravo model and an Alpha, have your engine serial number ready. There are variants, especially for the Mercruiser exhaust, with either a tube or accordion bellow. Check whether your engine is a V6, V8 or 4-cylinder, as the diameter of the exhaust bellow may vary. If in doubt, our technical team can validate the compatible reference for your One Gen 1, Gen 2 or Bravo.

When should you replace your drive bellows?

Maintaining the bellows is not optional; it is absolutely necessary for the survival of your vessel. Manufacturers and DAM Marine experts agree on a strict recommendation: replacement should be carried out every 3 years, or sooner if you notice cracks during visual inspections, often performed at the same time as the drive oil change.

DAM Marine expert advice:

Do not wait for a leak. A pierced bellow causes immediate water ingress into the drive U-joint and gimbal bearing. This corrosion can seize the transmission, damage the engine and, in serious cases, cause significant water ingress. The cost of preventive replacement is minimal compared with replacing a completely corroded Mercruiser drive.

Use your annual service, with replacement of the oil filter and fuel filters, to inspect the condition of the rubber. If the material appears dry or shows marked folds, it is time to intervene.

Essential items for installation

Replacing bellows on a Mercruiser Alpha or Bravo transmission requires method and, above all, specific drive tools. Attempting the operation without suitable tools risks damaging the new parts or causing poor sealing.

To complete your intervention successfully, make sure you have these items:

  • Bellows adhesive: essential for sealing the bellows tightly onto the metal surfaces. Without it, clamps alone are not always enough to guarantee sealing.
  • Alignment tool: after replacing the gimbal bearing, you must check the alignment of the engine with the drive. Poor alignment can destroy the engine coupler in just a few hours of navigation.
  • Bearing installation tool: this allows the new bearing to be inserted straight without striking it directly, preserving its structure.
  • Drive removal wrench: it makes transmission removal and access to the working areas easier, avoiding damage to nuts or the housing.

Select your Mercruiser bellows kit

At DAM Marine, we have simplified your search by grouping the essential components. Whether you need a Mercruiser kit for preventive or corrective maintenance, our references cover all requirements for Alpha One and Bravo.

A complete renovation kit generally includes the following elements, essential for a safe rebuild:

  • the exhaust bellow, or exhaust tube depending on the model;
  • the U-joint bellow, a critical part for protecting the transmission;
  • the shift cable bellow;
  • the gimbal bearing;
  • stainless steel clamps and the gaskets required for reassembly.

Choosing a complete gasket kit rather than individual parts guarantees compatibility between every component and makes work on your drive easier.
