We classify our bellows according to the main drive families:

  • Modern pivot-design transmissions: this concerns SX, DPS, SX-A and DPS-A models. These drives require perfect sealing to protect the gimbal bearing.
  • Classic transmissions: we also stock references for legendary series such as the 280, 290 and DP-S. Although older, these models require special attention to preserve their mechanics.

Important note: before ordering, always check the builder's plate riveted to your drive. This is the only reliable way to distinguish, for example, a DP-A version from a DP-E, whose parts may differ.

Choosing the right Volvo Penta bellow by compatibility

At DAM Marine, we know that an incorrect part can immobilise your vessel. Compatibility mainly depends on the drive model (270, 280, SX, DP-S...) and the engine block. An AQ120B block will not require the same components as a more recent V6 or V8 version. This is why using OEM references (Original Equipment Manufacturer) is the safest way to validate your choice.

It is also essential to distinguish between the two types of rubber protection on your transmission:

  • The U-joint bellow: it protects the transmission crosses and bearing. If it ruptures, rotating components corrode immediately and water can enter the bilge through the coupling passage.
  • The exhaust bellow: it may be simple or fitted with a non-return flap, depending on the architecture of your exhaust line.

Essential installation items: adhesives and clamps

A poorly installed new bellow will not protect your transmission. Successful installation depends as much on the quality of the rubber as on the fastening accessories used. Do not neglect these peripheral elements, which guarantee perfect sealing of the assembly.

Professional advice: a specific bellows adhesive is often required to seal the rubber to the metal housing and prevent vibration-related detachment. Likewise, clamps must be positioned precisely. We recommend lightly lubricating the tightening screws to ensure even tension without damaging the clamp, helping prevent future corrosion. Installation without these precautions seriously compromises protection for your drive.

To work cleanly, also plan the drive tools required for dismantling, checking and reassembling your transmission.

When and why should you replace your drive bellows?

Bellows are wear parts exposed to extreme conditions: salt water, temperature variations, and constant steering and trim movements. Regular visual inspection is essential to guarantee the safety of your vessel and preserve your engines.

Here are the warning signs that should trigger immediate replacement:

  • Cracks and splits: rubber dries out over time. If you notice fine cracks in the folds of the bellow, sealing is no longer guaranteed.
  • Material stiffness: rubber that loses flexibility becomes brittle and may rupture during drive lifting manoeuvres.
  • Rust or water marks: moisture or corrosion on the U-joint or bearing indicates an active leak.

The major risk is massive water ingress through the transom, destroying the U-joint and bearing and potentially flooding the engine compartment. We recommend a careful check at every winterisation and preventive replacement every 3 to 5 years depending on use. If in doubt, replace the part: the cost of a kit is minimal compared with repairing a flooded drive.
