Sterndrive universal joint (cardan)

The role of the universal joint

The universal joint connects the engine output shaft to the sterndrive input. It must carry high torque loads and compensate for movement between the engine and the drive.

A good U-joint helps reduce vibration and protects the gearbox and gears from shock loads.

When to replace a sterndrive U-joint

Clunking noises under load, excessive play, rust marks, stiff movement or torn bellows are clear signs that the U-joint should be inspected and replaced. A failing universal joint can lead to serious damage and loss of drive.

Renewing U-joints together with bellows and seals is an effective way to secure the driveline on a powerboat.
