The role of the upper gear housing

The upper gear housing supports gears, bearings and shafts that change the direction of engine power towards the propeller. It operates under high load and must withstand both mechanical stress and the marine environment.

A sound upper housing helps ensure smooth power transmission and reduce vibration in the driveline.

When to replace an upper sterndrive housing

Cracks, strong corrosion, damaged gear seats, excessive play or persistent oil leaks can justify replacing the upper housing. In many cases, fitting a new housing is more reliable than attempting to repair a heavily damaged casting.

With a new or remanufactured upper gearcase, you restore proper bearing alignment and sealing, improving overall sterndrive reliability.
