The true nerve centre of your boat, the control box brings together the throttle, gear shift, ignition, kill switch and often the trim. Because it is the only interface between you and your Yamaha engine, its proper operation is a matter of comfort, but above all of safety. The choice does not depend on preference, but on the layout of your helm station:
Important: these two models are absolutely not interchangeable. The internal kinematics, cable exit and overall space requirement are completely different.
This is strongly discouraged. Even if the cables may seem standard, the mechanical action direction, pushing or pulling to accelerate, often differs from one brand to another. In addition, the electrical wiring and connector plugs are specific to Yamaha. Such an adaptation is improvised work and harms reliability.
Yes, it is strongly recommended. Routing the cables through the hull is the largest part of the job. Connecting old tired cables to a new mechanism will reduce its smoothness and shorten its service life.
A twin-engine control box has two coupled levers and a double wiring harness. Trying to place two single-engine boxes side by side is strongly discouraged: handling becomes uncomfortable when manoeuvring, and coupling the electrical safety systems, kill switch and neutral safety, becomes a real technical headache.

This is the question every boater asks when faced with a temperamental control.
Always start with the cables. A stiff lever, jerky movement or gear that engages badly comes in 90% of cases from a seized or kinked cable. Cables wear much faster than the control box itself. This is the first thing to check.
When should the complete box be replaced? Although some small internal parts, such as the neutral switch or trim switch, can be replaced individually, a box whose mechanism has developed play or whose body has been eaten away by salt must be replaced. In addition, if you repower an older boat with a recent Yamaha, switching to a new-generation control box avoids stacking harness adapters, which are common sources of poor contacts.
