?? Role of the exhaust manifold on a marine engine
1. Exhaust gas collection
The exhaust manifold is a metal part attached to the engine head. Its main function is to collect burned gases from the various engine cylinders after combustion.
2. Exhaust gas pipeline
Once recovered, these gases are directed to the exhaust system, to a silencer or an outlet pipe. This process must be fluid so as not to create excessive back pressure that would affect engine performance.
3. Gas cooling
In marine engines, the collector is often "wet", i.e. cooled by water (often seawater). This water is injected into the manifold or the exhaust elbow to:
Reduce gas temperature (avoid overheating and fire),
Protect materials around (hull, piping, etc.),
Reduce noise.
4. Corrosion resistance and durability
The marine collector shall be capable of resisting corrosion caused by salt water and acidic gases. This is why it is often made from specific materials (such as 316L stainless steel or processed cast iron).

A cracked, pierced or blocked collector may result in:
Loss of engine power,
Overheating,
Toxic gas leaks (danger to crew),
An inlet of water into the cylinders (in cases of water return, which can destroy the engine).
