Propellers for inboard and outboard marine engines

Mechanical parameters: understanding pitch and diameter

Choosing a propeller is based on two fundamental measurements that determine the dynamic behavior of the boat. Correct sizing not only guarantees performance, but also protects the mechanical health of your engine by respecting the manufacturer’s rpm ranges.

Propeller diameter and swept area

The diameter corresponds to the distance between the center of the hub and the tip of a blade, multiplied by two:

Expressed in inches, it determines the thrust surface. A larger diameter moves a greater mass of water, improving initial traction and planing ability, especially on heavier boats.
An increase in diameter increases the load on the lower unit gearing. It is therefore crucial to validate the available power and torque needed to drive this reference.
Technical advice: During installation, check the alignment of the shaft splines and make sure there is sufficient clearance under the anti-cavitation plate to avoid any mechanical collision.

Propeller pitch and engine rpm

Pitch represents the theoretical distance traveled by the propeller during one complete 360° rotation:

A short pitch (low blade angle) favors torque and acceleration, ideal for water skiing or work use. A long pitch favors top speed by increasing the boat’s stride.
The empirical adjustment rule is precise: a one-inch change in pitch generally changes engine speed by 150 to 250 rpm.
The goal is to reach the maximum rpm range recommended by the manufacturer at wide-open throttle (WOT). A pitch that is too long causes harmful under-revving for the engine block, with excessive stress on the connecting rods.

Alloy comparison: aluminum or stainless steel

The material directly influences blade rigidity and the overall lifespan of the assembly:

The aluminum propeller is the versatile standard. Economical, it offers an interesting form of protection: in the event of an impact, the blade bends or breaks, absorbing part of the energy to protect the propeller shaft.
The stainless steel propeller is preferred for high performance. Five times stronger than aluminum, it allows thinner and more complex blade profiles (cup) that do not deform under load.
Switching to stainless steel improves overall hydrodynamic efficiency, offering better grip in turns and a more stable cruising speed, while also resisting abrasion more effectively.

3-blade or 4-blade configuration: impact on propulsion

The 3-blade propeller is the most common setup. It offers the best compromise for top speed and offshore efficiency.

Switching to a 4-blade propeller, or more, increases the total surface area in contact with the water. The result is powerful planing thrust, better handling in chop and reduced vibration. This configuration is ideal for heavy boats or towing activities, although it may slightly reduce maximum speed.

Wear diagnosis and maintenance

A damaged propeller creates turbulence and vibrations that prematurely destroy the lower unit oil seals:

Visual inspection: Look for signs of cavitation, such as a “pitted” metal appearance, bent trailing edges or chips. A clean leading edge is essential for efficiency.
Hub: Check the condition of the central rubber bushing. If it is defective (hub slip), the engine revs up without the boat accelerating.
Prevention: During removal, grease the shaft with hydrophobic marine grease and replace the cotter pin or lock washer on the propeller nut.

Frequently asked questions about marine propellers

How do I read my propeller dimensions?

The dimensions are stamped on the hub body or between the blades. A reference such as "14.5 x 19" indicates a diameter of 14.5 inches and a pitch of 19 inches. If the marking is unreadable, our technicians can help you identify the matching propeller using your engine serial number.

Can a damaged boat propeller be repaired?

Reconditioning a stainless steel propeller is common and relevant for restoring its original geometry. For aluminum, repair is technically possible but often less cost-effective than replacement with a new propeller, given the structural weakening of the material after straightening.
