The role of a hydrolube bearing

The hydrolube bearing is usually fitted in the stern tube or shaft bracket. Sea water flows through the grooves in the rubber or composite lining and provides lubrication between the shaft and the bearing surface.

It helps keep the propeller shaft centred, limits friction and reduces transmission of vibration to the hull.

When to replace a hydrolube bearing

Excessive play, unusual vibration, visible wear on the shaft or grinding noises are signs that the hydrolube bearing should be inspected and probably replaced. A worn bearing can cause misalignment and premature wear of the propeller, seals or other supports.

Renewing the bearing during shaft work or haul-out helps restore smooth operation and improve comfort on board.
