The role of the saildrive diaphragm on a boat

The saildrive diaphragm separates the inside of the boat from seawater at the hull penetration. It surrounds the saildrive leg and forms a flexible, watertight barrier between the engine compartment and the sea.

If the diaphragm fails, water can enter the boat, which is why a sound and correctly installed bellows is so important.

When to replace a saildrive bellows

Cracks, hardened rubber, visible ageing or uncertainty about the part’s age are clear signs that it is safer to replace the saildrive bellows. Regular inspection is part of essential safety maintenance on saildrive installations.

Bellows replacement is often carried out together with other service work such as gear oil change, seal inspection and anode replacement.
