Yanmar injection pumps

Yanmar injection pumps

What exactly does the injection pump do?

The injection pump is the most precise component in your diesel engine. It meters the diesel, pressurises it to very high pressure and distributes it to each injector with microsecond timing. Because it leaves no room for improvisation, DAM Marine offers a complete range of genuine Yanmar and high-quality replacement injection pumps and components to keep your boat reliable.

In simple terms, it manages three vital functions at the same time. That is what makes it essential, but also very sensitive to fuel quality:

  • It meters: it adjusts the quantity of diesel injected at each cycle according to your throttle input.
  • It pressurises: it raises fuel pressure to several hundred bars to allow perfect atomisation at the injector.
  • It times: it synchronises injection with piston position. Even a tiny offset degrades combustion.

Note from our mechanics: the internal elements of the pump are adjusted to micron tolerances and lubricated by the diesel itself. Water and impurities are its worst enemies. Water causes immediate seizure, while microparticles scratch the internal sleeves.

Frequently asked questions

Not necessarily, provided that you act quickly. Drain the water from the fuel-water separator, empty the filter and prime the system again with clean diesel before attempting to start the engine. If the engine has already run under load for several minutes with water in the system, the internal components may have seized and should be inspected.

Preventive maintenance is essential: regularly drain the bottom of the fuel-water separator, follow the recommended filter replacement intervals and avoid running the boat with the fuel tank nearly empty. A useful winter-storage tip is to keep the tank full to reduce condensation and limit water contamination.

How can you be sure you order the right Yanmar pump?

In marine mechanics, guesswork has no place. Your pump reference is strictly linked to your engine generation. Two pumps that look identical can have completely different internal settings.

To find the right part, have the following ready:

  • your complete engine model;
  • the engine block serial number;
  • the reference shown on the identification plate of your current pump.

Not sure? Our technical team can cross-check your references and make sure you get the right part.

Engine losing power or smoking: is the pump really at fault?

Before blaming your injection pump, always check the low-pressure circuit: clogged filter, air leak, water in the separator or tired lift pump. These lower-cost faults often imitate the symptoms of a failing pump.

If the low-pressure circuit is ruled out, here are the signs of a tired pump:

  • Loss of power: the engine refuses to rev under load, often due to internal wear or reduced flow.
  • Persistent white smoke when hot: poor combustion linked to an advance or flow issue, not to be confused with condensation at start-up.
  • Unstable idle: a surging effect caused by a governor that can no longer hold its setting.
  • Diesel leak: visible externally at worn seals, or internal. Warning: an internal leak dilutes your engine oil and raises its level.
  • Impossible starting: often a sign of seizure following water ingress.

Exchange unit or new pump: which solution should you choose?

An injection pump cannot be repaired casually on a workbench. Its calibration requires a professional test bench.

  • The exchange unit: this is the number-one choice. You receive a fully reconditioned, calibrated and guaranteed pump in exchange for your old core. It is the best cost/reliability compromise.
  • The new pump: ideal for giving your engine a long second life, or if an exchange unit is no longer available for your series.
  • On-site repair: this is limited to replacing external seals to treat a surface leak.

What are the golden rules for removal and refitting?

If you carry out the replacement yourself, follow these professional rules:

  • Mark the timing: mark the exact position of the old pump on its mounting. Poor alignment on refitting and the engine will run badly.
  • Cap everything: on both pump and line sides, protect the circuit from dust immediately.
  • Never bend high-pressure lines: they must align without force. If you twist them to compensate for a gap, they will eventually break with vibration.
  • Start from a clean base: drain the separator and replace the filter before restarting. A new pump on a dirty circuit will be destroyed a second time.
