Yanmar diesel fuel lift pumps

Yanmar diesel fuel lift pumps

What is the difference between fuel supply and injection?

The feed pump, often called a lift pump, is the heart of your engine's low-pressure fuel circuit. Its role is to draw fuel from the tank and deliver it to the injection pump. DAM Marine offers genuine Yanmar and high-quality replacement feed pumps, as well as repair kits, to help ensure the reliability of your fuel system.

Confusing these two pumps during diagnosis is very common. Yet their function and cost have nothing in common:

  • The feed pump, or low-pressure pump: this is a mechanical pump driven by the engine. It draws diesel through the water-separating pre-filter, pushes it through the engine fuel filter, then sends it to the injection pump.
  • The injection pump, or high-pressure pump: it receives this diesel and pressurises it to very high pressure before sending it to the injectors.

The mechanic's tip: a faulty feed pump creates symptoms that look like an injection problem. Always check the low-pressure circuit before blaming, and paying for, an injection pump.

Frequently asked questions

Loosen the bleed screw located after the pump and operate the manual priming lever. The diesel fuel should come out in strong, clear spurts. If the flow is weak or irregular even though the filter is clean, the fuel lift pump is probably at fault. Keep an absorbent cloth nearby to catch any splashes.

It can be used as a temporary solution, but caution is required: the delivery pressure of a standard electric pump is not always suitable. Excessive pressure at the injection pump inlet can disrupt its operation. It is therefore preferable to use the genuine Yanmar mechanical part designed to provide the correct pressure.

What are the symptoms of an obsolete Yanmar pump?

  • The engine starts, then stalls quickly: the circuit has just enough diesel to start the engine, but the feed can no longer keep up.
  • Power loss under load: the engine levels off. Warning: a clogged diesel filter gives exactly the same symptom. Replace it first.
  • Loss of prime when stopped: the internal valves no longer close, so diesel drains back into the tank. Starting becomes very long.
  • Red alert: the oil level rises: a pierced internal diaphragm lets diesel flow directly into the engine oil sump. The oil becomes diluted and thinner. If you notice this, stop the engine and replace the pump immediately to avoid serious damage.

Should I buy a repair kit or a complete pump?

The repair kit, including diaphragm, valves and seals, is ideal and economical if the pump body and its metal lever are in perfect condition.

A complete new pump is required if there is play at the lever pivot. Mechanical wear reduces the pumping stroke: even with a new diaphragm, flow will no longer be sufficient. Heavy external corrosion is also a reason to replace the complete pump.

How do you install and prime a Yanmar pump correctly?

  • Position the lever correctly: when fitting the pump to the block, make sure the pump lever rests properly against its eccentric cam and does not slip beside it.
  • Bleed in the correct order: filter, injection pump, then lines. Diesel must flow without any air bubbles.
  • Use the manual priming lever: never run your starter continuously to prime the diesel. The marine risk: the seawater pump can fill the exhaust until water backs up into your cylinders.
  • Priming tip: if the small manual lever feels soft and pumps nothing, the engine cam is already pressing on the internal mechanism. Give the starter a very brief tap to rotate the engine slightly: the lever will regain resistance.
