Yanmar injectors

What is injector “calibration pressure” and why is it so important?

A key component of your Yanmar marine engine, the marine injector sprays diesel fuel at very high pressure directly into the combustion chamber. Over many hours of cruising, wear is often gradual: combustion slowly deteriorates before turning into a real breakdown. DAM Marine offers a complete range of genuine Yanmar and high-quality replacement injectors and seals to restore your engine's full performance.

A mechanical injector is not just a simple spray hole: it is an ultra-precise valve that opens at a specific pressure, known as the calibration or opening pressure. This threshold ensures an extremely fine diesel mist and perfect injection timing.

Over time, the internal spring weakens and the opening pressure drops. The result? Diesel dribbles or forms large droplets that burn poorly. Because the engine keeps running, this fault often goes unnoticed at first. To preserve the engine's perfect balance, it is strongly recommended to replace all injectors at the same time on a multi-cylinder block.

Frequently asked questions

You can gently clean the outside of the nozzle, meaning the carbon deposits, with a brass brush, but never touch the spray holes. Fuel additives are excellent preventive products to limit fouling, but they will never repair a weakened spring or a scratched needle.

It is not mandatory, but inspect them carefully. If the conical seats, meaning the pipe ends, are marked, or if the pipe was twisted during a previous dismantling, it will leak. Never force or bend them to make installation easier.

How can you tell if your Yanmar injectors are worn?

Several warning signs should alert you to the condition of your injection system:

  • Black exhaust smoke: especially under load. This is the classic sign of poorly atomised diesel turning into soot, causing power loss and increased fuel consumption.
  • Metallic knocking: more noticeable when cold or at idle, this characteristic noise indicates harsh combustion caused by a dripping injector.
  • Difficult cold starting: without proper atomisation, diesel struggles to self-ignite in a cold engine.
  • Vibration and unstable idle: one cylinder performing worse than the others throws the whole engine out of balance, especially on small-displacement engines.
  • The mechanic's test: on a conventional engine, loosening the diesel feed to one injector while the engine is running helps isolate the faulty one. If engine speed does not drop, the injector being tested was already not working properly. On more recent Common Rail engines, excessive diesel leak-back will reveal the fault.

Should you rebuild or replace your Yanmar injector?

A bench test at a diesel specialist can check and adjust the calibration, using shims, if the injector body is still in good condition.

However, replacement with a new part is the safest and often the most cost-effective solution if your engine has many hours. Once the needle is marked, the nozzle is too carboned up or the body shows corrosion, repair becomes obsolete. Starting again with a new genuine Yanmar set ensures reliability for the coming seasons.

What are the golden rules for installation?

  • Always replace the copper washers: this is non-negotiable. A new washer ensures sealing, but above all, it transfers heat from the injector to the cylinder head. An old crushed washer will cause the injector nozzle to overheat.
  • Respect tightening torques: overtightening deforms the injector and affects its operation; not tight enough, and you lose compression.
  • Surgical cleanliness: the smallest impurity in the high-pressure circuit can scratch a new injector.
  • Clean the injector well: deposits at the bottom of the cylinder-head housing must be removed so the injector seats perfectly flat.
