The kill switch is the onboard guardian: it instantly cuts ignition if the helmsman moves away from the helm station. More than an accessory, it is a legal and vital requirement. If you fall overboard without this lanyard, the boat will continue on its own or begin a dangerous circle around the driver. DAM Marine offers a selection of genuine Yamaha and high-quality replacement switches and lanyards so you can boat with peace of mind.
The principle combines mechanical simplicity with electrical reliability. The fork, the red plastic clip, held by the lanyard, locks the switch button in place. If the driver moves away, the lanyard pulls out the fork: the switch releases and immediately grounds your engine ignition. The result is clear: the engine stops instantly.
Mechanic's reflex: your engine refuses to start even though the starter turns perfectly? Check your kill switch first. A poorly fitted or missing fork is the number 1 cause, and the quickest to fix, of an outboard that refuses to start.

Kill switch cord for Yamaha engine.
With Yamaha, the reference mainly depends on three criteria:
Please note: the coiled lanyard and fork are generally ordered separately from the electrical switch. Be precise about what you need.
We strongly advise against it. The geometry of the Yamaha fork is precise. A generic clip could either jump out by itself with engine vibration, or jam and fail to do its job if the driver is thrown out. For a vital safety component, the original part remains the only reasonable choice.
To guarantee perfect operation, a simple test is required before every outing: with the engine idling, pull sharply on the lanyard to check immediate shutdown. While underway, always attach the snap hook to your life jacket or around your thigh; a lanyard wrapped around the wheel or console loses all usefulness. Back at the harbour after a sea trip, a light freshwater rinse will extend switch life by limiting corrosion. When replacing the part, remember to apply a little marine dielectric grease to the electrical terminals to protect them from moisture. Finally, the mechanic's small tip: always keep a spare lanyard and fork set in a locker. This small part is very easy to lose at the launch ramp, and its absence is enough to cancel your day on the water.
