Maxwell anchoring systems

Maxwell equipment is born from innovation and backed by decades of experience manufacturing the world’s highest-quality anchor windlasses, deck accessories, and aft-handling products.

To choose the right anchor-handling gear, consider your boat’s style and size, expected anchoring conditions, and the weight/type of ground tackle. Maxwell offers an extensive range of windlasses to suit all types of tackle, bow configurations, locker space, and power needs :

  • RC vertical series in stainless steel (AISI 316) and HRC horizontal series, which automatically handle combination rope/chain rodes and suit boats from about 4.5 m (15 ft) up to ~22 m (75 ft).
  • Scalable RC12 windlasses that automatically handle combination rope/chain rodes, suitable for lighter-displacement boats up to ~24 m (80 ft).
  • Versatile VC series (vertical capstan) for all types of line handling.
  • Traditional VW series (Vertical Windlass) for manual handling of a spliced rope/chain rode connected with a conventional shackle (except the hybrid VW10).
  • VWC (vertical windlass/capstan) and HWC (horizontal windlass/capstan) series, which automatically handle chain-only rodes.

Vertical or horizontal — Maxwell offers both

Vertical systems have several advantages: they take up less deck space, are easier to maintain, and are less expensive than equivalent horizontal models. Chain or rope/chain alignment with the bow roller, while less critical than on horizontal windlasses, should be within about ±2° for smooth retrieval. Alignment of the rope/chain rode with RC-series windlasses is more critical (see owner’s manual). With vertical units, more chain is in contact with the chainwheel, minimizing the risk of chain jump. The take-off from the warping drum can be in any direction, unlike the fore-and-aft limitation of horizontal models.

Horizontal models excel where deck thickness is extreme (over 200 mm), under-deck access is limited, or when two anchors must be handled by a single windlass. Maxwell products are distributed and supported worldwide by a comprehensive service network.

Each windlass is available with a correctly sized circuit breaker to ensure electrical protection during normal operation. Maxwell capstan windlasses and anchor windlasses fitted with capstan drums are made of knurled stainless steel (AISI 316) for maximum grip and control of rope lines or rodes.
