How to determine the right VETUS steering system
Different combinations of boat speed, rudder area, and balance sections exert varying forces on steering systems. In addition, dynamic influences from wind and currents are a constant factor, placing significant load on steering systems in challenging conditions.
The skipper relies on the vessel’s steering system, so it must be dependable in all circumstances. The design of the steering system determines how quickly the vessel responds to helm inputs. Fast, light boats react quickly to small helm movements, while slow, heavy-displacement boats generally require more helm movement for a given course change. Careful, thorough calculation is therefore essential to determine the optimal steering system for a given vessel.
Rudder torque
Selecting the correct cylinder is verified using the vessel’s rudder torque in Nm (or kg). Rudder torque is the decisive factor (torque = force × lever arm). To determine the correct rudder torque, only the boat’s maximum speed, the rudder area, and the maximum rudder angle (in degrees) are important. Information such as boat length and engine power is not relevant. With few exceptions, rudder performance is optimal when the maximum angle is 35° to each side. Contrary to what is sometimes claimed for normally sized rudders, a larger rudder improves a boat’s manoeuvring capability.
